Dog Day at the Beach

Last Saturday my family and I took our dog, Bailey, to Assateague Island in Maryland. This was his first ever trip to the beach and we were all so excited to see how we would respond.

We woke up bright and early that morning and took and easy 3 1/2 hour drive up to the island. Bailey is such a wonderful travel buddy, sometimes we forgot he was in the back of the car because he was so quiet! We arrived and found a lovely spot on the beautiful beach. It was a bigger beach than I expected, and there were lots of other dogs already there–it is a dog friendly beach year round. Bailey immediately took to the sand and started trotting towards the ocean. We were all so surprised that he was so brave. He lept over the cold waves as they came close to him. He tried to run from the bigger ones.

It was a beautiful day, sunny and in the 70’s. It was so relaxing and fun for our whole family. After a couple of hours, we decided to head off to Ocean City, Md, only a 20 minute drive from where we were. On the drive out we passed by a lot of wild ponies, (they inhabit Assateague) some of them were right on the road! They were beautiful and we were so excited to see them up close since we had heard a lot about them.

Once we were in Ocean City, I found an outdoor seafood restaurant that allowed us to bring Bailey with us to eat. We ate delicious food at a picnic table in the sand and set up a little place for Bailey to rest. When we finished we went to get ice cream from Dumser’s–Ocean City’s most famous ice cream place. After a short stroll on the boardwalk we headed back to the car and drove home.

I so enjoyed this short day trip. We all plan on going back soon (with Bailey) because it was such a fun and relaxing experience. I absolutely love being by the beach and wish that we lived closer, but it makes it that much more special when we do go.
