New York State of Mind

Yesterday I took a spontaneous day trip with my mom and my sister to one of our favorite places in the world: New York City!  As we approached the Holland Tunnel we took in the sight of the iconic New York City skyline. A new structure is being built where the twin towers used to stand called Freedom Tower. It was neat to see it under construction – it looks like it is almost completed.

When we arrived in the city we went to eat lunch at a small, family owned, Israeli restaurant called Gazala Place, which had been featured on a T.V. show the night before we left. It was in an area of the city called Hell’s Kitchen. The food was authentic and fresh. My mom and I each ordered a lunch platter that consisted of fresh homemade pita bread, babaganoush, hummus, goat cheese spread with olive oil, and falafel. I think the picture speaks for itself. We all left feeling full, happy, and ready for a day of walking around the city.

Our first stop was to take the subway downtown to SoHo. We walked down Broadway and Houston Streets, where there are lots of shops, cafes, and outdoor vendors. After some shopping at our favorite stores and vendors, we decided to get a coffee and try to sit down somewhere. Starbucks was so full and there were no seats so back to the streets we went. My sister purchased a vanilla yogurt in a cone dipped in chocolate from an outdoor food truck called YoGo (they were all over the city). She really enjoyed it–we had never seen these trucks before so I assume they are new to NYC. They are a great addition for the summer months.  After a few hours spent downtown we hopped back on the Subway to head to Midtown.

We walked over to Bryant Park to get a cold drink and enjoy the sights and sounds of the city. While we were hanging out, one of my friends from London texted me that she worked close to Bryant Park. We walked over to the beautiful building she works at and she came downstairs to meet us! The bus she takes to go back home was on the way to where our car was parked so we all walked together. I was really excited to see her and catch up, even if it was just for 20 minutes. Sara and I then went to Pret a Manager (which reminds me so much of London, since my friends and I used to eat there a lot) to pick up some food for dinner on the road.

It was very hard to leave New York, it always is, but it was so fun to get a little dose of it to hold us over until next time. There really is nowhere in the world like Manhattan. Life is too short not to take day trips to NYC!
