An Ode to Winter

As most of you know, those of us in the northeast are having another snow day. It has been a coooooold, snowy winter.  And I, for one, am ready for spring. (15 days!) But we always seem to want what we can’t have. Before you know it, we will be complaining about how hot it is and how we can’t wait for fall (my favorite season). I thought I would commemorate winter by appreciating how beautiful snow can be, instead of doing what I wanted to originally, wish it away.

There’s nothing like a snow day. Waking up to a blanket of white, keeping your pajamas on all day, listening to the silence that snow can bring. Roads are quiet and all you can hear is the crunching of snow beneath your boots. Hot chocolate, fires, sledding, snowmen and angels. These are all the memories that snow days can conjure up.  I love watching a city come to a standstill. Washington, D.C. is a bustling city filled with busy roads and even busier people. But a snowstorm (or even just a prediction, honestly) can bring this city to a full stop. And it’s beautiful to watch.

Winter is a humbly beautiful season. It isn’t the traditional sense of beauty with bright colors, blooming flowers, or sunny skies. It’s monotone, calm, sleepy. It’s a good time to focus on quieting your mind and hibernating a bit. Life can get so busy and stressful, but snow days force us to do nothing but sleep in, relax, play in the snow and appreciate the warmth of your home. It’s a reminder for us to spend time to reset ourselves. We can’t do all we want to do in this life if we don’t stop every now and then to recharge. My Bailey boy loves to play in the snow. There is a lot we can learn from dogs <3

I was at an Entrepreneurship Panel last night hosted by Ladies D.C.  A group of inspiring women entrepreneurs shared their advice and stories on starting a business. One of the women was asked what she thought was the most important thing to invest in when starting your own business. Her response was “yourself”. She said that you are your idea. You are your business. You  have to take care of yourself before anything else. I thought that was pretty inspirational. I think snow days are a good reminder to stop every now and then and take care of yourself.

Happy snow day!
