Island Dreams

Several years ago my family took a trip to Puerto Rico. My mom’s family is from Puerto Rico and at the time her cousin still lived there, so we booked a trip to visit her. And it was a gorgeous trip. We stayed in Condado and our hotel was right on the beach. The picture above was the view from our hotel room – it was incredible! We could just open the door and feel that salty island breeze fill our room.

Luckily for us we had a very knowledgeable tour guide, my mom’s cousin, who was a local. We spent our days lounging on the numerous beaches and coves that outline the island, eating delicious street food, and discovering Puerto Rico’s main attractions. One afternoon we went to visit the forts in Old San Juan.  Puerto Rico has a rich and varied history beginning with Columbus’ discovery of it.

One of my favorite memories from this trip was our visit to El Yunque, Puerto Rico’s rainforest. We hiked up the mountain and passed by many exotic and beautiful plants. I remember it being very hot, but it felt exactly how I would imagine a rainforest to feel!

After hours of hiking, we finally reached the top. It was a little cloudy, but the view was stunning. I could see mountains and beaches everywhere I looked.

The blue Caribbean waters, yellow sandy rocks, and green mountains made every view of Puerto Rico picture-worthy. The people were friendly and the food was delicious. My mom frequently makes Puerto Rican food at home and I love it. If you haven’t tried it yet, I recommend you do. Tostones are my favorite!

Every restaurant we ate in provided a view like the one below. Open windows everywhere, completely surrounded by water. I wish I had even more photos to share, but this trip was years ago, before smart phones.  My trip to Puerto Rico feels like a dream, but it has left me with distinct and warm memories.
