The Importance of Bucket Lists

2016-09-10-10-16-00

Life is a collection of experiences. When you are nearing the end of your days you aren’t going to look back and regret the things you did, but the things you didn’t do (as they say). And I think that is absolutely true! In the end, the only things that matter are the people you loved and the memories you made. I, for one, want to ensure that I look back on a life that was full of love and adventure. Of course there are important things we need to focus on such as building a career and saving money to be financially stable to make sure we are able to live comfortable and healthy lives. But I think it is important to always have something you are working towards or looking forward to. You shouldn’t allow yourself to get sucked into the day in – day out of the work grind without having personal goals and dreams.

This is where I believe bucket lists are critical to achieving true happiness. If we don’t have a reminder of what we want, it can be easily lost or forgotten. Even crossing off one or two things on a bucket list can be incredibly satisfying. And you shouldn’t wait until you hear you have cancer or some other dramatic experience to realize what you want to achieve in your life– and I mean what you really want to do. See the world wonders, visit all 50 states, stand on top of the Eiffel Tower, take in the spectacular sight of the northern lights. These are all things that you can work toward if you have the dream (and a plan to realize that dream).

Bucket lists can include simple things too– Pack a picnic on the beach, plan a camping trip, get a tattoo, run a marathon. It doesn’t matter what’s on your list, it is totally personal. The important thing is knowing what you want and working toward that goal. Life is flying by us and we need to fly with it and make sure we are creating a life we love. The only person that is going to do that for you is YOU.

Some of the things on my bucket list include:

  1. See the northern lights
  2. Visit Switzerland/Italy and stay in a cabin in the Swiss Alps
  3. Visit Australia
  4. Take a roadtrip across the country
  5. Visit Yellowstone
  6. Go on an African safari
  7. Trek to Mount Everest Base Camp
  8. Take a trip to the moon (Hey, you gotta dream big!)

What would you put on your list?
