Notes on the Sea

Belmar, NJ

Belmar, NJ

Sunshine, hot sand, crashing waves, melty ice cream, lively music, bright umbrellas, salty breezes. There is nothing like the feeling of just arriving at the beach and taking that first breath of ocean air.

Every summer of my life I have been to the beach. For the first 8 years I lived at the beach (in Miami). Since then, I have taken at least one trip a summer to the Jersey Shore. I have visited most of the shoretowns sprinkled along the Jersey coast.  I am so accustomed to being at the beach every year; I know I never want to live too far from the ocean. What is it about the ocean that makes us feel…that way we feel…when we see it? I often experience a mixture of happiness, relaxation, and contemplation.  I think the vastness of the ocean encourages us to open our minds and search its depths to understand ourselves better.  It provides a pause from our daily routine to reflect on the life you are living (unless your daily routine already includes going to the beach, of course!)

In about a week I will be in Cape May, NJ. Land of the dolphins. Last summer I had the chance to go on a dolphin tour, and it was absolutely spectacular. My next goal is to get in the water with them! I am so looking forward to sinking my toes into the warm sand and breathing deeply while searching for dolphins in the crashing waves.

I hope everyone has had the chance to spend some time in their happy place this summer, whether that is in the mountains, at the lake, by the beach, or simply your backyard pool. It is so important to take time for yourself to recharge.
