Autumn in the Shenandoah Mountains

shenandoah3

The Shenandoah Mountains lay just over an hour west of Northern Virginia and Washington, D.C. I love living in the D.C. area because it is so metropolitan with everything you could ever want, yet we are just a short drive away from true country and mountain living. And there is no better time to enjoy the mountains and countryside than in autumn.

One of my favorite drives on the east coast is along Skyline Drive. Driving along the winding mountainous roads provides spectacular views overlooking the top of the Shenandoah Mountains and the sharp drop off the side of the road into the Shenandoah Valley. It has become a very popular tourist attraction over the years as it offers hiking trails, camping sites, and souvenir shops along the drive.

I was lucky to go to school at James Madison University located in Harrisonburg, VA, which is nestled in the Shenandoah Valley and surrounded by the Blue Ridge Mountains. My roommates and I took a road trip in early fall one year to the peak of one of the nearby mountains called Reddish Knob. We watched the sunset over the mountains that evening before making the steep drive back down to Harrisonburg. (My car’s battery died at the top of this peak. Thank god for the men in a truck who came by to save the day just as the sun had finally set. We were bracing ourselves for a long cold night sleeping in my car!)

Growing up in South Florida I had never seen anything like the Shenandoah Mountains before. When I moved to the north and first laid my eyes on the view, it took my breath away. One day I hope to go camping in this beautiful area. It will always be a special place to me and I will never get tired of the drive out to the mountains!

Have you ever visited the Shenandoah Mountains? What is your favorite mountain range?
