Eva’s Lens: Carolina Christmas

My fiancé and I took an overnight trip to Charleston, South Carolina before venturing further south to visit my family for Christmas. We wanted to celebrate our anniversary and explore a new city at the same time!

First stop: Hominy Grill. This southern gem wow-ed us for sure. Everything from the grilled banana and pumpkin bread to start to the pudding for dessert (yes dessert for lunch) was spectacular. I would highly highly recommend this place, not just for the cozy farm-like ambiance, but because it was the best chocolate pudding I have ever tasted.

After lunch we wandered around town, visited the waterfront, a historic row of townhouses called Rainbow Row, shopped on King Street, and checked out the College of Charleston. We had a bit of a break before the start to our evening, so we regrouped and relaxed at the hotel for an hour or so before our night out.

All smiles wandering the streets of Charleston

Carl and I started at Vendue Roofdeck and ordered the recommended crab dip appetizer. We were able to sit outside on the patio in comfortable couches and took advantage of happy hour. After it got dark we ventured over to our dinner reservation at Magnolias, where I had the best scallops I’ve ever eaten. Magnolias was authentic southern food and did not disappoint! After, we went across the street to another gem, Gin Joint, to have an after dinner drink. The bartender made us craft-cocktails catered to our taste, it was a treat! I’ve learned that bartending is a unique skill and an art of sorts. Especially at the Gin Joint!

The next morning we had another delicious meal at Toast in Charleston. I could hardly finish my meal after all of the eating the night before. Carl had his first country ham experience and ate up practically all of the gravy that came with the homemade biscuits. We need to cool it in the food department in the New Year for sure!

After our yummy breakfast, we took a horse and carriage ride and explored downtown Charleston. We learned that no buildings were to be taller than the Church’s steeples and that Charleston has a lot of history dating back to the 1800’s. It was an hour tour and an educational one at that.

Later that afternoon, we said goodbye to Charleston and headed to Bluffton, South Carolina to spend a week with my parents. I was so happy to see them and see how my mom decorated their new house with Christmas decorations. Over the whole week I spent time with my dog Baci, enjoyed the Christmas lights, ate a lot of yummy food and relaxed with my family. It was a perfect way to end 2015.
