Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley isn’t the Rocky Mountains – especially when it comes to skiing! But Massanutten Resort – nestled in the Shenandoah Mountains about 10 miles east of Harrisonburg – nicely serves the purpose for those seeking an easy daytrip ski fix.
A recent Saturday visit – my first to Massanutten – was fun and exceeded expectations. Nothing fancy here – just four chair lifts (a triple and three quads) quickly get you to a handful of green, blue and black trails that are quite modest, even for East Coast skiing. But the lift lines were short (it was a well-attended peak season Saturday), the terrain well groomed, the skiers courteous (yes, even the snow-boarders) and the experience worth the two-hour drive from Northern Virginia.
An intermediate skier, I spent the day mostly on two neat blue trails – Showtime and Mass Transit – that run parallel separated by a median of trees. The wider Showtime gets most of the traffic, leaving the narrower and less crowded Mass Transit (a misnomer?) to those of us preferring more speed and space! It was a pleasant afternoon of nice runs on mostly open trails.
And for a small ski resort, Massanutten’s ski lodge and new outdoor deck pavilion over-achieve! You don’t expect to find facilities of that size and quality at such a modest mountain.
It’s not Vail, or Aspen, or Lake Tahoe – but Shenandoah’s Massanutten delivers a fun winter day in an area best known for its spring, summer and fall beauty.
