A recent road trip to the Smoky Mountains brought me to the artsy town of Asheville, NC. I look forward to writing a post soon detailing my road trip, but first I want to review two great cafes I visited while in Asheville.
Sunny Point Cafe
Located in West Asheville lays a gem of a restaurant–Sunny Point Cafe. This family-owned restaurant offers upscale comfort food and is open from breakfast until dinner. Sunny Point takes pride in making all their food from scratch. They even have a cute garden in the back where they grow herbs and vegetables which they use in their dishes–how cool!
Walking into the cafe it was easy to sense the cleanliness. As the staff wiped down their tables they also wiped down the chairs too. The owners of the cafe were visible and involved. The food was fresh and served quickly. I started off with an appetizer of fried green tomatoes and they were incredible. They were crunchy on the outside, juicy and sweet on the inside, drizzled with red pepper aioli and served with a generous dollop of goat cheese (my favorite).
For my main entree I ordered their chicken and waffles–I just had to. It’s one of their specialties and I figured if I am in the south I should eat southern food! It didn’t disappoint. While southern food is not traditionally one of my favorite cuisines, this was a tasty dish that could have satisfied my breakfast, lunch and dinner needs all in one dish!
For dessert, my family and I shared a German Chocolate cake. So rich and so good. As a treat, our server sent us home with some of their homemade donuts that they make fresh in-house every morning for breakfast. We saved them for the next morning and split them over coffee. They were heavenly! Although I ate at Sunny Point Cafe for dinner, they are well known for their breakfast as well. My impression of this quaint restaurant was fresh food, excellent service, and high quality in everything they do.
Early Girl Eatery
Another absolutely adorable place to eat is a cafe located in downtown Asheville called Early Girl Eatery. I had read a lot of good things about this cafe so my family and I decided to check it out for breakfast our first morning in Asheville. The signage out front was cute and old fashioned. And it didn’t stop there. The entrance to the cafe featured a long hallway that led to a brightly lit and colorful room filled with tables, windows, and greenery. We sat at a cozy table overlooking a street in Asheville with the delicious scent of breakfast surrounding us.
The food was both healthy and scrumptious. We all ordered different things including bacon, eggs, and, of course, coffee. My sister and I tried the Sausage and Sweet Potato scramble–it was as tasty as it sounds! I also had a chance to speak with the owner and I was very excited to hear her story. She and her family own two restaurants in Asheville, the other is called King Daddy. I could tell how committed she is to the quality and service her staff provided. We all left happy and full.
As I mentioned earlier, I will write more about my experience visiting Asheville and its surrounding areas in another post. But if you ever visit Asheville be sure to check out Sunny Point Cafe and Early Girl Eatery. They are both family owned, high quality cafes committed to serving tasty food with superior service. It will be worth the visit and your stomach will thank you.
