Minimalization

I love watching the FYI television show Tiny House Nation. It’s so fun to watch people declutter their lives and design a tiny home to meet their needs. I have an obsession with clean, creative, small spaces to live and work in. As a whole, our generation seems to be moving towards simpler living with less “stuff” and more freedom–and I am totally on board with this lifestyle.

I’ve been very busy these last few weeks helping my parents sell and move out of our single family home. It’s a special home that holds so many childhood memories for me, and I am going to miss this place a lot. However, I have really enjoyed clearing out rooms and donating or throwing away the things we don’t need. It’s amazing how many things we accumulate. I’m a sentimental person–I like to hold on to every card or note someone gives me. I love creating memory jars and vision boards and collecting artwork. But I also find it very therapeutic to clear out what isn’t as important to me anymore.

And simplifying relates to travel too.  When I packed to study abroad in London for three months I tried to bring as much as I could fit in two suitcases. But after a month of being there I realized there was so much I could have lived without. I didn’t save space for souvenirs and I ended up getting rid of some of the clothes I brought with me. Now, I try to just pack a carry-on for most trips I take. It’s so freeing to pack lighter and enjoy my trip without being weighed down.

I would rather live in a small, affordable place and have more money and freedom to achieve my goals. Living modestly gives you the financial freedom to travel and spend money on experiences rather than things. (If that’s what you’re into!) I don’t want closets packed to the brim with unnecessary items. I would rather live simply and more free!

What are your thoughts on minimizing? Do you think our generation is moving in the direction of smaller properties and simpler living?

I love that show too! You are so right, carrying less and having less stuff at home really does make one feel so much better 🙂ReplyCancel
