Guest Post: 12 Hours in Amsterdam

Sara Scherer is Erin’s sister (the founder of Wonderlost). She recently visited three countries in Europe and generously offered to share her experiences in the Netherlands, France, and Belgium with us! First up: Amsterdam. Stay tuned for more posts from Sara coming up in the next few weeks!

Amsterdam, Netherlands

This past summer, my boyfriend, Tom, and I went to visit his parents in the Netherlands. It was a trip to remember! His parents made the big move from Kansas to Sassenheim, Netherlands a few years ago, so they knew all the best places to go and things to do. Throughout the trip, we traveled to Belgium and France (coming soon!) but first I’ll tell you about the day I spent in Amsterdam.

One of my good friends from college lives in Sweden, and we were lucky enough to meet up in Amsterdam for the day. Tom and I took the train from Sassenheim to Amsterdam. When we arrived, we were met with the quintessential sight of row houses lined up against the canal.

There were bikes everywhere! Watch out, you’re more likely to get hit by a bike than a car in this city. There are also cafés everywhere. Whether you’re looking for coffee or weed, you don’t have to walk far.

After a few minutes of walking around, we fortuitously bumped into my friend and her boyfriend (fiancé now!). We found a café and grabbed a table outside along the canal. We were lucky to have a few hours of sun before the clouds crept in. Since the Netherlands has a cool, rainy climate, everyone flocks outside to enjoy the short summer season.

After lunch, we went on a canal cruise. I definitely recommend doing this if you are ever in Amsterdam. It’s the best way to get a feel for the city, see all the famous sites, and learn the history from the tour guides. Depending on your mood (and budget), you can choose a fancy dinner cruise or a casual cruise.

I only spent a few hours in the city catching up with my friend, so I didn’t really plan on seeing many sites. If I’m ever back, I would love to visit the Anne Frank House and the Van Gogh Museum. Amsterdam is a charming and unique city where you’ll be met with picturesque sights and the occasional whiff of weed.
