Guest Post: Le Mont Saint-Michel, France

Sara Scherer is Erin’s sister (the founder of Wonderlost). She recently visited three countries in Europe and generously offered to share her experiences in the Netherlands, France, and Belgium with us! This week’s post features a beautiful castle in France. Stay tuned for another post from Sara coming up next week!

France, Castle, Le Mont Saint-Michel

My absolute favorite destination was Le Mont Saint-Michel. It was a magical sight and a must-see if you’re ever in Normandy, France. Le Mont Saint-Michel is an island commune that was founded in the 11th century. It is mostly a tourist attraction now, although a few monks and nuns still live there.

During high tide it looks like a castle floating in the sea. If you have the time, I definitely recommend seeing it during both the day and night to get the full experience.

Once inside the walls, you’ll find narrow cobblestone streets lined with shops and restaurants. For all you Harry Potter fans, I felt like I was in Diagon Alley! The path takes you up to the top where you’ll find a beautiful abbey. The church is grand and rich with history, and the view from the top is breathtaking.

You’ll find lots of restaurants and cafés, but only some of them offer a view of the bay. We were able to get a table overlooking the bay just as the sun set. It was well worth the wait.

If you are interested in visiting Le Mont Saint-Michel you can take a bus from downtown. The bus leaves every few minutes and is only about a five minute ride.

Le Mont Saint-Michel is a must-see for any traveler!

This held a fascination for me since high school. One week there was a chapter with Mt. St. Michel and I longed to see if from that moment on. When I got the chance to visit, it was as magical as I imagined. We took the bus and as it got closer I was just in awe. We actually stayed there in a hotel, but I’m not sure staying nearby so you could view it wouldn’t be wonderful in its own way. I highly recommend it as an adventure destination of a lifetime!

Now, I travel with the kids and write travel guides for them. It is interesting to see what captures them about each destination. One day they’ll be inspired to travel to one place over others….. Traveling gives the gift of traveling memories.ReplyCancel
