Guest Post: Destinations in Asia Worth Exploring

After years of traveling, you sometimes get sick of tourist attractions and want to get out of the beaten tracks. I don’t blame you for that, but let’s not forget that some places are this popular for a reason after all. Here’s my list of some places in Asia victim of their success but that are still worth a visit.

Angkor Wat | Siem Reap | Cambodia

Angkor Wat, Cambodia

Angkor Wat, a famous UNESCO site in Cambodia, attracted over 2 million of people in 2015. Angkor Wat is part of the famous temples complex and is the largest religious monument in the world! Even though it is crowded at 5am for sunrise, the view, the history and the architecture totally make up for that! However, if you want to visit this beauty, hurry up because Cambodia is going to take measures soon to reduce tourism and preserve the place.

Koh Phi Phi | Krabi |Thailand

Koh Phi Phi view point

This island is quite famous and crowded, so it would be a place I would normally tell you to avoid! However, the island is gorgeous and great for a couple day escape to see one of the most famous places in Thailand. I would recommend you to climb up to the view point and enjoy the postcard-like landscape. After that, book an island tour and enjoy the magnificence of rocks emerging from the water surrounding the bluest lagoons. If you’re in a party mood and don’t mind being surrounded by other tourists, stay overnight and enjoy the nightlife of the island, the fire shows, and all the games organized by hostels to entertain their visitors!

Kuang Si Waterfall | Luang Prabang | Laos

Kuang Si Waterfall, Luang Prabang

Even if the name isn’t familiar to you, you may have heard about these beautiful waterfalls! With clear blue water, many basins as well as big waterfalls, Kuang Si Waterfall is definitely a sight to see! 27 kilometers away from the city of Luang Prabang, this is the perfect place for a day trip. Take advantage of this time to admire the wonderful sights, relax and swim in the cold water! If you go there early enough by yourself, you can avoid the buses of tourists that arrives around 11am.

Gili Trawangan | Bali | Indonesia

Sunset Beach, Gili T

Gili Trawangan is one of the three stars islands of Bali with Gili Air and Gili Meno. What I liked in this island is the atmosphere! No cars, scooters, or tuk tuks- everybody is either walking, driving a bike or using horse cars to get around the island. Even though it is crowded with tourists and slightly more expensive than Bali, spending some time in Gili T is definitely worth it. Go to the sunset beach and take pictures on the swings, relax on the beach while admiring the boats, book a snorkeling day to swim with turtles, go to Lombok for a 3-day trek on the volcano with amazing views. You have many options to spend a great time on this incredible island!

Bagan | Myanmar

Bagan, Myanmar

Now this last place is quite the exception. Myanmar is not a very touristy place because its borders were recently opened to tourists. However, Bagan is definitely the place to go to in that country if you love exploration and big spaces! You will find yourself near other tourists in the city because it has very few hotels and hostels, but during the day, while you’re driving around the temples, you rarely meet anyone as there are more than 2000 temples and so many itineraries possible! For sunset and sunrise, people usually go to the same temples recommended by locals. Another excellent thing is Myanmar locals are so welcoming and friendly! Tourism isn’t in its peak yet, so please go check it out before it gets crowded like Thailand!

I have never been to any of those places you mentioned here maybe because I am not a fan of the touristy place, but the sunrise at the Angkor Wat and the Lombok Volcano sure have their reason for popularity. Sometimes it is great to trust the collective intellectual of travel guides and the tourists.ReplyCancel
