A Weekend Escape: My Experience with Getaway

This past weekend my boyfriend, Ryan, and I booked a stay with Getaway. It was such a peaceful retreat from our busy lives, and a great way to say farewell to fall as winter begins to take hold in our area. Traveling has been proven to provide some serious health benefits, which one of my fellow bloggers has detailed in this article on the 25 science-based health benefits to traveling.

I first discovered Getaway through a post on Facebook and immediately knew we had to book it. I’ve always been fascinated by tiny homes, minimalist living, and escaping your routine to connect with nature, and this was a perfect way to have that experience. (Speaking of, if you haven’t watched the documentary Minimalism on Netflix I highly recommend it.)

The idea behind Getaway is to book a stress-free “getaway” without having to plan too much in the way of an itinerary or to even worry about directions. They have homes located within two hours of New York City, Boston, and most recently, D.C., and they make it a true escape! When you book a Getaway house you don’t learn the address of where you’re staying until one week before your trip. They do this so you can just relax and not worry about logistics. I was so impressed by their communication too. They sent personal, meaningful emails leading up to our stay, created a “Getaway Spotify playlist” for us to enjoy, suggested a local market to purchase food, and recommended their favorite nearby hikes.

After an easy drive, we arrived close to where our Getaway house was located. We decided to do one of the hikes they recommended called Oak Canyon Trail. It was a moderate hike located on the edge of Shenandoah National Park and it led to a beautiful waterfall. Our path followed a cascading river which provided a peaceful sound of babbling water the whole time. The trail was covered with leaves so it really felt like we were wandering free in the forest – it was so wonderful!

After we finished the hike we stopped by a store to pick up some food for the night and then headed straight to our Getaway house! It was located on a campground with several other tiny houses on it. Each house has it’s own name – we stayed in the Virginia.

We walked in to find a sweet note on the table with complimentary s’mores waiting for us. They also provided a booklet filled with ways to keep ourselves busy since they encourage you to completely disconnect. In the booklet were questions to get to know your partner, poems about nature, riddles, constellation maps and so much more. There is no WiFi or T.V. in the home, just books, cards, and beautiful windows with views of the forest. Ryan and I had so much fun making our way through the booklet by the campfire.

The rest of the afternoon and evening we simply relaxed. We read, we talked, we sat in silence enjoying the view.  We made dinner over the campfire and ate sweet potatoes and chicken. It was a perfect afternoon.

As we went to bed that night, the rain started coming down, pitter pattering on our roof lulling us to sleep.

That morning we woke up slowly, made tea, and listened to the squirrels scampering across our roof.

We already can’t wait to return – for longer next time. If you’re interested in checking it out, head to getaway.house. It’s one of the coolest things I’ve ever done.

I hope you enjoy the short video I put together of our stay there. If you have any questions about booking a getaway, let me know!
