Indulging in Asheville, NC

I know we already have a “where to eat in Asheville” blog post from the other half of Wonderlost, but I recently went to this mountainous, artsy, yummy city and just have to share my meals with you!

We indulged on good food and good beer – on our last day in Asheville we had two breakfasts if you can even believe that! Here are some of Asheville’s hot spots that you must try:

Good Eats

Buxton Hall was our first stop! The industrial feel to this big restaurant with an open kitchen and colorful bar was a beautiful sight. The food was a more beautiful sight since we were all hungry after our long ride from Greensboro, NC. I got the BBQ sandwich because I had to – I am in the south! It was decadent.

Tupelo Honey is another delicious spot that I am so happy we indulged in. While walking to the back where our table was, I made sure to look at what everyone was eating because I knew there would be a lot of good choices.

Right away we were served some warm biscuits with their signature honey – it was so delicious. Seeing all of the breakfast dishes made it harder to choose! So I went with a lunch option – grilled cheese with some BBQ on it. (Can you tell I was craving some good southern BBQ? Can’t get that in New England!)

Taco Billy is a cozy taco joint that sells breakfast and lunch tacos. We went for breakfast (our first stop as mentioned above) and the tacos were so satisfying that I almost went in for a third — but I knew we were about to have a dessert for breakfast so I restrained.

I got the Billy Joel and the Mama’s favorite – both delicious. The Mama’s Favorite is the most popular breakfast taco available, and I now know why. The sausage, sweet potato, cheese and egg mixture made for a savory, melt-in-your-mouth taco.

Hole. Even though we all left satisfied at Taco Billy, we had to make a stop right across the street at Hole – a small funky donut shop. We made the mistake of going the day before when all of the donuts were sold out, so we knew we needed to come early to get the goods, made fresh daily. We watched our donuts being made right in front of our eyes which was so very cool. Everyone working there was so enthusiastic that we came to visit; it made our experience that much better. The donuts were worth coming back for!

Breweries

We went to four breweries in Asheville: Hillman, New Belgium, Wicked Weed and Burial. All were delicious- I enjoy belgian white, light, saison type beer so I definitely ordered this at each. Each brewery was low key, had some outdoor space, and great food options. We had a delicious sandwich and kale salad at Hillman, admired the huge grounds at New Belgium, and enjoyed nightlife at Wicked Weed, on the main road in downtown Asheville.

You can tell a lot about a city from their food scene- and our experience in Asheville was definitely formed around the places we ate and drank at! Asheville is filled with great restaurants, good ambiance, and friendly vibes all mixed together with southern charm and hospitality. What’s better than that?

Have any of you been to Asheville? What was your favorite restaurant?
