Falling in Love With Breckenridge, Co

A few months ago my boyfriend and I booked a trip to Colorado. Little did I know it would be a life-changing trip. Ryan proposed to me while we were in Breckenridge, Colorado and he is now my fiance!

The state of Colorado is so beautiful- I couldn’t get over the breathtaking views and varying landscapes across the state. If you enjoy winter sports, quaint scenic towns, and friendly locals, I highly encourage you to put Breckenridge on your list. It is one of my favorite places in the country now! (I may be a little biased.)

Beaver Run Resort

We booked our stay at Beaver Run Resort, and it surpassed our expectations. We booked a suite with a living room, bedroom, kitchen, huge bathroom, deck with a gorgeous view, and a real wood-burning fireplace.

In the resort we found plenty of restaurants, shops, and outdoor hot tubs to soak in after a day on the slopes. It’s a ski-in/ski-out resort which means you literally walk outside and can jump on a ski lift! It made our few days there easy and stress-free. They also provide a free shuttle to take you anywhere downtown, which we took advantage of.

Our first day in Breckenridge we arrived, settled in, explored the resort and headed into town. We ate a delicious dinner at Ollie’s, recommended to us by our shuttle driver. The thing I loved about the town of Breckenridge is that it really is “a town.” It’s not filled only with tourists, the locals all live, work, and play right there too. All of the restaurants we ate in had a real local vibe. We enjoyed seeing the Christmas lights and walking in the snow. We decided to purchase each other our Christmas gifts that night – and each got a ski jacket. A great souvenir to use for years to come.

That evening we relaxed by a fire in our resort and watched the snow come down. It was so peaceful.

The next morning we woke up to a wintery wonderland. The sun had come out and the snow was shining off the trees, rooftops, and landscape! We took a walk that morning to take a few photos around the resort and eat breakfast. We rented our ski/snowboarding equipment for later that day– all of which was done at the resort. We decided to buy lift tickets starting at 2pm since it was much cheaper than buying lift tickets for a full day. Then we headed to town!

I loved walking through the streets of Breckenridge. There are two “main streets” where you can find all the shops and restaurants – there is Main Street and a parallel street called Ridge Street. We ate a delicious lunch at Flip Side, and walked up and down the beautiful, decked-out-for-the-holidays streets.

We headed back to the resort around 1:00 PM to get ready to hit the slopes! After gearing up and a taking few practice runs down the bunny hill, we jumped on a ski lift to the top of the mountain. It was a beautiful (and a little scary) ride up. I am proud to say I’ve skied the Rockies now!

After a few hours, we headed back to the room to change and hit the outdoor hot tub. We floated in our own hot tub staring up at the sunset, surrounded by snow. It’s a moment I’ll always remember.

That evening we went to dinner at the lively Mi Casa Mexican Restaurant and Cantina and then headed back to the resort. Ryan built a huge wood burning fire in our room so we could warm ourselves. To my surprise, that is when he proposed! He opened up a beautiful wooden box with a DoAmore ring inside. It was perfect, intimate, and beautiful.

It was so hard leaving Breckenridge the next day, but we were treated to a beautiful, sunny drive out of the town. Stay tuned for the rest of our Colorado trip. But for now, I’ll just keep dreaming of Breckenridge.

Here are a few tips for visiting Breckenridge:

  • Get altitude sickness medicine. The town of Breck lies at about 9,600 feet and if you ski you could go up to over 12,000 feet. I was definitely affected by altitude the first day I was there, even with the medicine, so start taking the medicine the day before you arrive. And drink lots of water!
  • We rented a car because we wanted the freedom, but you don’t need a car in Breckenridge. It’s very walkable and all the resorts have these amazing free shuttle services. It’s about a two hour drive from Denver and there are shuttles and busses you can take from the airport to Breckenridge.
  • There are over 10,000 hot tubs in Breckenridge. Relaxing in a hot tub surrounded by snowy mountains was one of my favorite parts of this trip – so if you visit, make sure your resort has an outdoor hot tub!
  • If you have longer, there are so many other things you can do in Breck. Snowmobiling, gondola ride, or cross-country skiing. Next time we go, we want to stay longer!
